About Project

European sports network for rehabilitation of persons with disabilities

PROJECT BASIS

Persons with disabilities have lower levels of physical activity than their peers, consequently 38% of the population is obese (53% more than people without disabilities). High costs for health services caused by overweight (increased blood pressure, diabetes Type 2, Hypercholesterolemia, stroke, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, etc.) are a huge problem for the European tax payers. Thus the network of competent and specialized European partners will cooperate in the project “ReSport” to develop new rehabilitation sport activities (“ReSport Activities”), test psychophysical improvements of persons with disabilities and promote physical activity among them. Project implementation will raise awareness on the importance of physical activity and transfer knowledge at the European level.

Sport is an area of human activity, which is important for all citizens of the European Union and has the exceptional potential to bring people together and reach everyone, regardless of their age, social status, disability, race or gender. The basic goals of physical activity are optimization of the psychosomatic state of a person, efficient spending of free time, carrying out preventive health measures, health enhancement and general well-being and recovery.

Sport activities also represent an efficient rehabilitation method for persons with disabilities. Through regular sport activity persons with disabilities can achieve greater quality of life and improved social inclusion. For this purpose persons with disabilities need to be provided with the possibility of participating at sport events, appropriate sport programmes, where they can equally participate and access to sporting and recreational areas. Sport activities need to become a component of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, regardless of the nature or degree of their disability, age and level of physical competence.

This is the reason why the project partners of “ReSport” have decided and approached the preparation of comprehensive sport solutions in the area of physical activity with rehabilitation effects for persons with disabilities. The project will enable and provide free sport, recreational and other activities through which motoric, physical and psychological, cognitive, sensory and other capabilities of persons with disabilities will improve. It will promote volunteering (volunteers as holders of activities or assistants in carrying out new sport programmes for persons with disabilities), encourage fair play and equal opportunities for everyone, strengthen social skills, increase social integration and encourage intercultural dialogue.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE:

  • creating innovative and exciting ways to engage and inspire all, especially to get persons with disabilities involved in high quality physical activity – preparing and developing a group of new rehabilitation sport activities – “ReSport Activities”, that use innovative approaches to educational and sporting strategies, to include more persons with disabilities in sport,

  • encouraging physical activity in relation to personal and social development of individuals,

  • support innovative and educational approaches to preventing violence, racism, discrimination and intolerance in sports by carrying out the “EU Equal ReSport orientation day” (encouraging interpersonal cooperation of young people and people with disabilities with the goal to prevent violence, racism, discrimination and intolerance in sport),

  • preparing joint European “ReSport Guidelines” for implementation of “ReSport Activities” for activating persons with disabilities to increased physical activity,

  • training 200 people (sport experts, teaching practitioners, coaches and volunteers), who will implement “ReSport Activities” in different areas in the EU,

  • perform 15 local actions (7 local “ReSport Actions” and 8 “EU EQUAL ReSport orientation days”) and 3 international “ReSport Camps” (2 summer and 1 winter camp) for persons with disabilities to implement and promote new “ReSport Activities”,

  • promoting and stimulating voluntary activity in sports through carrying out educational and training seminars, and local and international “ReSport Actions” (for and by young people, families, sport experts, etc.).

  • creation and development of the European “ReSport” network (European network to enhance cooperation between institutions, volunteers that cooperate at carrying out sports and rehabilitation activities for persons with disabilities) – achieving synergies through the cooperation of local, regional, national and international stakeholders – promote sports and physical activities and address sports-related challenges.

  • encouraging social inclusion of persons with disabilities to have equal opportunities in sport, especially by supporting the implementation of the EU strategies, in particular the EU Strategy for Gender Equality and the EU Disability Strategy by carrying out “ReSport Activities”, local and international “ReSport Action” and “EU Equal ReSport orientation days”

PROJECT GOAL

The project “ReSport” promotes voluntary activities in sport, social inclusion, equal opportunities and awareness of the importance of health-enhancing physical activity through increased participation in, and equal access to, sport for all.

The partnership’s goal is to enacourage cooperation of target groups in the area of sport and physical activity and to support implementation of the EU principles of good governance in sport, the EU strategy for social inclusion and equal opportunities, the EU guidelines for physical activity and other EU documents.
